16-22 October 2012
Maqam were honoured to be invited to perform in the historical city of Trabzon at the Karadeniz Technical University State Conservatory's 1st International Music Studies Symposium, entitled
“Music and Cultural Texture”
During our brief stay in the capital, Maqam had the great pleasure of playing an informal gig in a Byzantine cellar or Mahzen, in Arnavutköy. Hosted by the Hungarian-Turkish Friendship Organization, we were also treated to beautiful folkloric music from different regions of Turkey.
On our final day, Tarik Beshir gave a workshop at the Istanbul State Conservatory on muwashah Laha Badr El Timm (‘The full moon passed fleetingly’) and the principles of the musical form known as the Wasla (وصلة), including notation and performance practice. Having the students play the muwashah with us was a real highlight.
We also gave a post workshop performance, compromising of a Wasla in Maqam Nahawand: Zikrayati, Raq el Habib, and Lamma Bada Yatathanna; a Wasla in Maqam Bayyati including Rouhi wa Rouhak and finally being joined by the wonderful Özlem Varlı for a performance of Inta Omri and Garipler Sokağı.
