Yara joined Oxford Maqam in 2009 as a singer of mid 20th century Egyptian music before exploring the repertoire of the turn of the century whilst in the band.
She has received training in vocals, maqam, percussion and oud from Tarik Beshir, Dr Ahmad Al-Salhi as well as Dr Ahmad Mukhtar, Issa Boulos and Wael Abu Bakr.
Following Yara's research into famed Egyptian singer-actress Munira Al-Mahdiyya, Oxford Maqam recently performed and recorded rarely heard musical theatre works Sobort w Nolt and Esma' Aghani Al-Mahdiyya.
Yara also has a special interest in pre-1948 Palestinian musical tradition, inspired by the work of researcher and composer Issa Boulos. She is currently completing a doctorate on Egyptian song tradition of the last century.
