Yara joined Oxford Maqam in 2009, a singer of popular Egyptian music of the 20th century before specialising with the band in music of the Nahda era singing muwashshah, dawr and taqtuqa.
She has had the privilege of receiving training in vocals, maqam, percussion and oud from Tarik Beshir, Dr Ahmad Al-Salhi as well as Dr Ahmad Mukhtar, Issa Boulos and Wael Abu Bakr.
Following her research into Egyptian commercial recording and musical theatre star Munira Al-Mahdiyya, Oxford Maqam recently performed and recorded Munira's rarely heard songs Sobort w Nolt and Esma' Aghani Al-Mahdiyya.
Yara also has a special interest in pre-1948 Palestinian musical tradition, inspired by the work of researcher and composer Issa Boulos.
